While we all should be proud of our natural skin tone during all parts of the year (refer to yesterday’s post https://brookesays.com/2015/11/07/self-confidence-and-being-eco-friendly/ ), I can also understand where sometimes you just need to be a little bronzed. Instead of baking inside of a tanning bed, self-tanners are a great alternative that are better for your health and the environment. Depending on your skin tone depends on which bronzing products will be a good fit for you, it’s very similar to makeup. I have very red and pink undertones to my skin as opposed to a more yellow undertone. Any makeup counter person at your local department store can tell you this if you aren’t sure where your skin tone lands.
Just as a reference to the pictures to come, the one below is me without self-tanner.
(Pale and proud)
Spray tans: I have gotten great ones both done by a person and done by a machine. Whichever route you choose, do not let anyone to convince you to go darker than you should. A good rule of thumb is to choose a shade that is one level darker than your own. This will give you a good bronzed look without making you look orange…
(aka rolled in Doritos and then spent 3 hours in the bath tub scrubbing it off)
At home self-tanner: I generally have not had a lot of success with these. I keep trying and haven’t found one that looks good with my skin tone. However, I do know people who swear by the Sally Hansen self-tanner that you can get at your local grocery store.
BLOW YOUR MIND ECO-FRIENDLY NO CHEMICAL SELF-TANNER:
The most natural tan looking fake tan I’ve ever had was when I mixed cocoa powder with my normal every day lotion. I distinctly remember a girl I was working for asking me about it and being slightly mind-blown when I told her. Here are the nice things about it:
- No weird chemicals
- It’s brown and not orange
- You can control the level of brown that you desire based on the amount of cocoa powder you use
- It’s way cheaper
- It washes off much easier than normal self-tanner that you buy at the store
Perfectly brown and bronzed
Try it for yourself and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Also, if you are fair skinned and have red and pink undertones to your skin, your best bronzer is going to the Dallas by Benefit (https://www.benefitcosmetics.com/product/view/dallas). I had a women recommend this to me at Sephora and it will change your life if you struggle with finding bronzer.
Stay Eco-Fabulous, my friends!
