Jack Frost isn’t a cheap date…

It is no secret that I really really despise the winter time. It’s cold, it’s grey, and it’s expensive! The increased use of energy to heat and power your home gets pricey for those of us who choose (unwisely) to live in a colder climate. It’s time to fight back against winter! I have complied a list of tips to save energy this winter and still stay nice and toasty!!

— When something is in the oven, no peeking!!! Opening that oven door can lower the temperature about 25 degrees; therefore, longer cooking time and wasted energy.

–Matching the size of your pan to the size of the stovetop heating element. Mis-matching here inefficiently heats, which wastes energy…and money!

–Use your microwave! On average they use 50% less energy than your other appliances, a Potato express will cook your sweet potatos and russets to perfection. It is also much faster than an hour and a half in the oven. Link for potato express:  http://www.amazon.com/Potato-Express-1000188-Microwave-Cooker/dp/B00FGQXJXI

–Cover drafty windows! You can get black out and insulating curtains at Big Lots for about $10-$15 a set, I’ve noticed a huge difference since installing these!

–Turn down the temperature of your water heating system to 120 degrees, you’ll save money and won’t scald yourself!

There are many more options on how to save energy, depending on how deep your pockets are. If you have the money to replace your windows to reduce the leaky cold air, then do it! However, for the young, fabulous, broke, and eco-friendly these tips will hopefully get you through this winter!
